The perfect Kubrickian way to end the 2017 experience you survived. Join me, Valet Girls, on a very merry initiation on the true meaning of Christmas, from the yearly shopping bonanza to after-hour department store shenanigans to the Rothschild mansions in soft holiday repose to the ritual we participate in every year. It's an annual veil, but a perennial vice.

As Samuel L. Jackson said in my favorite movie, "Hold onto your butts": it's a very Valet Girls Christmas comeback album.

Special thanks to Maël and E95, and STAQQ OVERFLO for lending a much-needed listening ear when I hit writer's block :)

merry XXXmas y'all

Valet Girl's Reflections (7/27/18)

In a lot of ways, PERENNIAL VICE feels kinda like an oddball twist in what I've put out. Released a few months after coming back from a two-year hiatus, I can remember the urgency I felt while making it. I think some of that anxiety bled through.

To be fair, I didn't cooperate very well in making a traditional comeback album. Christmas albums aren't typically the kind of vehicle you'd latch a comeback onto. The theme - a psychosexual social commentary of society's degradation of the holiday season, using an "Eyes Wide Shut"-like storyline - isn't the cheeriest sell in a genre built on nostalgia.

But what I love about vaporwave is its propensity towards world-building and narrative. Both elements are critical to understanding PERENNIAL VICE, which starts happily enough until it slowly darkens towards the quasi-ritualistic climax of the album, the twin "Meaning of Christmas" pair. The final track puts the annual holiday veil on a year-long societal vice.

I think I was chasing the production style I employed for「WE NEVER HAD CTRL」(2015) a little too much, and along with the anxious energy, imbued this project with a certain tension that goes beyond just the theme.

Another point of interest: the final track. This track represents the first time I layered synths on top of a classical piece, a technique I would flesh out with much greater detail and theme relevance in LOSTWRLD (2018).
