Valet Girl's Reflection (11/6/17)

Wow, what a process. I was going through a lot. I was trying to change, not really my style, but my personal self. This is how I pitched it to RetroTech back in the day:

"One overarching theme is that we should embrace the new permutations of vaporwave that have come up in the past year or so, and that attempting to direct it is both artistically stale and incredibly futile. It's simple. We never had control. By nature of art itself, we've never had control over the direction of its evolution, and by its own artificial online nature, it was meant to evolve and develop at a speed much faster than natural selection (coming from the guy who's debut was a concept album about Jurassic Park, I have some authority on the matter haha). The two track's I've released as teasers for the project, 「MAVIS BEACON TEACHES KAMASUTRA WINDOWSの'95」 and 「DEPARTMENT INSTRUCTIONAL AUDIO #86: DIGITAL MEGAFAUNA DISPLAY」, are both pretty atypical vaporwave releases sonically, sampling sources that most vapor producers wouldn't think twice of using. Additionally, my influences for this album are also not the norm; drawing from my poptimist roots, "WE NEVER HAD CTRL" is colored heavily by Britney Spears' "Blackout" & Janet Jackson's "The Velvet Rope" (I almost considered naming this record "The Vapor Rope" but thought that too campy lol). I want this release to be both accessible and to push some buttons. Vaporwave is meant to be an experience, and if I play my cards right, this experience should be both timely and timeless.

On another level, I'm dealing with [a lot] in life. The two tracks I've shared are very much influenced from some lost years in my life and finding closure from some stupid decisions I've made along the way. The two aforementioned albums I'm drawing a lot from, Blackout & the Velvet Rope, serve as archetypes for the work I'm producing: Blackout serving as both Spears' hedonistic magnum opus and the pinnacle of her critical acclaim, while the Velvet Rope is Janet Jackson's confessional masterpiece, touching on topics considered faux pas by the pop mainstream. It's a personal album about when I didn't have control over many aspects in my life, and how perhaps in this digital age, I still may not."

I liked exploring other genres and going a lot more maximalist on this one, and its still my fave album <3

track 1, i'm cocky and confident until i'm wrecked in tracks 2-4. Track 5 is a transition from the frenetic A-side to the chill B-side of the album. I enter a personal hotel of myself, into a wave new world
